Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Question
What is i-Legasi?
i-Legasi is a facility that allows EPF members the option to transfer part of their savings to the EPF accounts of their immediate family members once they have reached the eligible age for full withdrawal.
Why does EPF allow i-Legasi applications?
i-Legasi is designed to allow EPF members to support the retirement financial security of their family members (Transferees) without affecting the adequacy of their own (Transferor) retirement savings.
What are the eligibility requirements for the transferor?
To be eligible as a transferor, a member must:
i. Be an EPF member who has reached the age of 55; and
ii. Have total savings in their EPF account exceeding the Adequate Savings level (RM650,000).
What are the eligibility requirements for the transferee?
To be eligible as a transferee, a member must meet all the following criteria:
- Be an EPF member who has not yet reached the mandatory retirement age (60 years);
- Be a Malaysian citizen or Permanent Resident; and
- Have a family relationship with the transferor, as one of the following:
a. A legally registered spouse under Malaysian or foreign law;
b. A biological child;
c. A stepchild;
d. An adopted child (legally adopted and registered with the National Registration Department).
Frequently Asked Question
How to apply for i-Legasi?
The Transferor can visit the nearest EPF office with the required documents.
What are the documents required during application submission?
Original or one (1) certified true copy of identity verification documents as follows:
i. MyKad or Police/Armed Forces Authority Card of the Transferor and the Transferee. If MyKad is unavailable, a Confirmation Letter of Public Identity Card or Birth Certificate of the Transferor/Transferee is required.
ii. Valid Passport of the Transferor (for non-citizens).
iii. Citizenship Certificate of the Transferor (if MyKad has not yet been issued).
iv. Birth Certificate of the Transferee (if the transfer is to a biological child).
v. Marriage Certificate or Child’s Birth Certificate (if the transfer is to a spouse or stepchild).
vi. Adoption Confirmation Letter from the National Registration Department (NRD) (if the Transferee is an adopted child).
Documents iv, v, and vi are required only for the first i-Legasi transfer application and do not apply to subsequent applications to the same Transferee.
Is a member required to receive advisory services when applying for i-Legasi?
Yes. Members must go through an advisory session first to understand the implications of i-Legasi on their retirement savings.
How is the i-Legasi transfer carried out?
The i-Legasi transfer involves transferring the EPF savings of the transferor to the transferee as follows:
| Transferor Age | Transferor Account | Transfer | Transferee Age | Transferee Account |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Why is i-Legasi only credited into Akaun Persaraan and Akaun Emas?
i-Legasi is only credited to Akaun Persaraan and Akaun Emas to ensure that the transferred funds remain protected and are used for retirement purposes. This measure helps the transferee build stronger retirement savings and safeguards their financial well-being in later years.
Why is i-Legasi allowed only after the transferor reaches the age of 55 and above?
i-Legasi is allowed only after a member has reached the age of 55 and has savings above the Adequate Savings Level. However, only the amount exceeding this threshold can be transferred. This ensures that the transferor’s own retirement needs are protected before any funds are transferred to eligible family members.
What is the eligible amount that can be transferred, and how is the eligibility amount for the i-Legasi transfer calculated?
The eligible amount for transfer refers to any savings that exceed the Adequate Savings Level in the members’ total EPF savings. The current Adequate Savings Level, as determined under the Retirement Income Adequacy Framework, is RM650,000. Therefore, only the balance exceeding RM650,000 may be transferred through i-Legasi.
The transfer can only be made from accounts that are eligible for withdrawal, subject to the member’s age and the prevailing EPF withdrawal rules.

Is the i-Legasi transfer considered a voluntary contribution?
No. It is not a voluntary contribution because it does not involve fresh funds. It is simply a transfer of existing savings from the Transferor to the Transferee.
What is the transfer limit?
Minimum: RM50
Maximum: No limit, as long as the transfer does not reduce Transferor’s savings below the Adequate Savings Level.
When will the transfer be credited to the Transferee’s EPF account?
The transfer will be credited after a 7-calendar-day cooling-off period from the application date.
Can the Transferor reclaim the amount transferred to the Transferee?
No. Once transferred, the amount cannot be returned to the Transferor’s account.
Can the Transferor transfer to more than one Transferee in a single application?
Yes. The Transferor can transfer savings to multiple Transferees as long as the savings balance remains at least at the Adequate Savings Level. Documents to prove the family relationship must be submitted for each Transferee.
Does the Transferee need to be present when an i-Legasi application is submitted?
No. The Transferee’s physical presence at an EPF counter is not required.
Can the Transferor submit more than one i-Legasi application on the same day, and is there a daily limit on the number of applications?
There is no daily limit to the number of applications per day, as long as the savings balance remains at least at the Adequate Savings Level.
Can the Transferor amend the transfer amount for an i-Legasi application that has been submitted?
No. To change the transfer amount, the Transferor must cancel the original application and submit a new application with the desired amount.
How can the Transferor check their i-Legasi application status?
The Transferor may check via the KWSP i-Akaun app, contact the EPF Contact Centre, or visit any nearby EPF office.
Will both the Transferor and Transferee be notified once the i-Legasi transfer is completed?
Yes. Both the Transferor and the Transferee will receive a notification via their KWSP i-Akaun inbox or SMS.

Frequently Asked Question
What happens to an i-Legasi transfer if a Death Withdrawal application is made by the Transferor’s heirs or nominee?
If a Death Withdrawal application is submitted during the cooling-off period, the i-Legasi application will be automatically cancelled. However, if the Death Withdrawal is submitted after the cooling-off period, the i-Legasi transfer will remain unaffected.
What happens to an i-Legasi transfer if the Transferee passes away during the cooling-off period?
If the Transferee passes away during the cooling-off period, the i-Legasi application will still be processed, and the transfer will be credited to the Transferee’s EPF account, provided that the Transferor has not submitted a cancellation request within the cooling-off period.
Can the Transferor apply for any EPF withdrawals during the cooling-off period?
Yes. The Transferor is allowed to make any eligible withdrawals, as long as there is sufficient balance in their EPF account.
Can i-Legasi transfers be made if the Transferor and Transferee have different savings options (Simpanan Shariah/Simpanan Konvensional)?
Yes, it is allowed. Differences in savings options (Simpanan Shariah or Simpanan Konvensional) between the Transferor and the Transferee do not affect the i-Legasi transfer.
