The loss of someone close is always a deeply emotional experience. During this difficult time, family members often face not only the challenge of coping with grief but also a range of practical responsibilities, including unexpected financial matters.

To offer support and compassion, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) provides Death Assistance to help ease the financial strain on the families of members who have passed away.

What is the EPF death assistance?

The EPF Death Assistance is a one-off goodwill payment of RM2,500 provided to the next of kin of an eligible EPF member. This assistance is not part of the member’s EPF savings, but an additional benefit granted at the discretion of the EPF

The main purpose of this Death Assistance is to help families manage funeral expenses and initial arrangements following a member’s passing

Who is eligible?

The next of kin of a member who are eligible to receive this death assistance are:

  • Spouse (widow or widower) – if the member was married
  • Children – if there is no spouse or if the member was divorced
  • Parents – if the member was single

What are the eligibility requirements?

To qualify, both the deceased member and the applicant must meet specific conditions:

EPF Death Assistance eligibility: deceased age/citizenship; next of kin eligibility and application timeframe.

How is the Death Assistance processed?

A Death Withdrawal application must first be submitted by the next of kin (applicant). If eligible, Death Assistance will be processed automatically; no separate application is needed if the Death Withdrawal has already been submitted.

Required documents

Bring a completed KWSP Form 9KM (AHL) along with the necessary supporting documents, including:

  • The deceased member’s death certificate
  • Your identification document
  • Your active bank account details
  • Proof of relationship to the member (e.g., marriage certificate for spouse, birth certificate for child)
  • Any additional supporting documents as required

A full checklist is available on the EPF website.

Note: Bring both originals and photocopies of all documents, neatly organised, to ensure a smooth process at any EPF office.

After you submit your application

  1. EPF will process the Death Withdrawal application once all required documents are submitted.
  2. If the application is approved and all eligibility conditions are met, the RM2,500 EPF Death Assistance will be credited directly into the applicant’s active bank account.
